Sad, sad news... :(

Saturday we did our longest bike ride to date: 45 miles and a number of mountains. We finally made it to the town of Redwood Valley and stopped at a little market for some last minute supplies before heading out to Lake Mendicino to camp for the night. Before we left, we gave Myrtle what was to be our last pet and ear scratch for her, from us. We left the market and proceeded to take a very mountainous 'shortcut' called Road B to the lake. We finally made our weary way to the campground and talked to a very wonderful ranger named Paul, who let us stay in the section that was closed for the season because they didn't have hike/bike campsites (which are usually cheaper). Exhausted, we finally got to our campsite and went to the trailor to let Myrtle out. The rope that had been tied to her harness was there, but she was not. The only possible thing that could have happened was that she got out of the trailor when we were inching up one of the hills on Road B. It was a quiet road with nice houses and kitties running around and beautiful hills and squirrels and birds, and she must have decided that it seemed like a place she wanted to stay. We rode back along the road the next morning with unloaded bikes calling out her name. Paul got us the numbers to all the animal rescue places in town. We called them all, but no one had brought her in, and they still haven't called. Another ranger named Marie said she ran a kitty rescue place too and she got our number. The phone has been quiet; I'm sure it's because whoever found her fell in love. She was so cute, and sweet and friendly, and she liked to snuggle at night, and she had this cute little meow she would do when she saw some string moving on the floor...we miss her so much! But there's nothing more that we can do. She might never be turned in, she might not have liked the trailor, or she could one day escape someplace inhospitable, or get hit by a car...it probably better just to let her go where she wanted to go, not that she gave us a choice...Goodbye Myrtle Marie. We miss you and will always love you.

Dear Anonymous,
I'm sorry you feel slapped, and disappointed in us. We were a bit short on options, and the fact that Michael gets very seasick was a bit of a safety issue. We neither wanted to die at sea nor be stranded penniless in a foreign country. I'm sorry this upsets you. I'm also sorry that you have not had the opportunity to experience a gale first-hand or to be without enough money to survive, but I also can't say that I would wish these eperiences on anyone. They are not fun, and I'm sorry you don't understand that. You might be happier if you don't read our blog anymore; and good luck when you sail around the world-bring lots of money and leave Portland in August, not September! Cheers!
Cathy and Michael
